East Coast Trip 2024 - July 29
July 29: Today is a busy day because we have several items on our itinerary. We woke to high winds again and were told that one thing on our list is postponed to the morning - whale watching. We started at Norstead Viking Village and we walked through various buildings built to Nordic specifications. The first building houses a full scale Nordic ship which is 45 ft long, 16 ft wide and can float in 3 ft of water. We walked outside and Alan tried his hand at ax throwing. Note the buildings all have living roofs. There were displays showing yarn crafts, in particular, weaving and one needle knitting. Another building was a small church, a communal building and a blacksmith. The communal building would have housed about 35 people and their livestock, cooking facilities, and sleeping quarters. Quite fascinating. We then went to lunch at a local restaurant where we again had fish and chips. After lunch we headed to another site, L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site where we watched a video about the arrival of the Vikings. Our rescheduled Viking Celebration dinner took place and we enjoyed a beef roast dinner with vegetables and a salad, with a Newfoundland Bread Pudding for dessert. After dinner, the entertainment consisted of some Nordic style dancing and holding a court of grievances. It was hilarious.
