East Coast Trip 2024 - September 15

September 15: Today the weather is nice and we chose to drive to the coast, St. Mark's National Wildlife Refuge, in particular. It was about an hour away and we chose to take both dogs. It was a hot muggy day and the bugs were out in full force. Situated along the Apalachee Bay coast is St. Mark's Lighthouse. There is much to tell about this lighthouse which is too much to write about here, so here's a link that will give that information: https://www.stmarksrefuge.org/lh-history. We took a walk along the Lighthouse Trail and were greeted by at least 4 species of butterflies, and a whole lot of biting bugs. We were told about several other wildlife that live in the refuge but the timing was bad. Animals are smart, they find a nice place out of the sun to sleep and not pay any attention to visitors. 😉  The day was nice so we got a few nice pictures to share. I took some pictures of the (recreated) residence and it's hard to believe there was a family of 10 living in a 4-room dwelling. But things were much different then.

March 25: Today we boarded a bus for a morning of tourist shopping and lunch in Ensenada. The tour guide took us on a tour of Ensenada with a stop at the Cultural/Convention Center. ( Built in 1930, it was a hotel and casino until 1935, visited by renowned Hollywood and Mexican artists during the ban in the United States, such as Rita Hayworth, Dolores del Río, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, among others. After 40 years of abandonment, once again you can enjoy its Moorish architecture, serving as inspiration to dozens of young people who take classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, dance, ballet, theater and literature. ) At the bar, we learned about the history of the drink "Margarita" or at least one version of its origins. The bar has the photograph of Sra. Margaret King. This report claims that she wanted a cocktail that was different from others. Mexico 2025 - Day 5

March 13: Today was an interesting one. We woke to the sound of rain, not the light misty stuff. Enough to cause little rivers across the roads in the campground. Protreto Campground is beautiful. It offers RV spots with 50 amp power and water at the sites, with a dump station. It was the first day we traveled as a caravan. The wagonmasters lead and the tailgunners were the last rig. We left at 9 am. The border crossing was slow mostly because of the large number of RVs (all 22 of us) in line and the border agents were entering the RVs while asking questions about what we were bringing into Mexico. Our "kids" behaved during the questioning and Lucky decided to hide behind the couch the rest of the journey. At about the halfway point, we had to turn around and pick another road because a telephone pole had fallen across the (4 lane) highway in the direction we were traveling. March 19: Guerrero Negro: Today was an early morning rise again - 5:30 am alarm. We were a go for whale watching. The winds were low. We were taken by bus at 8 am to the harbor where we boarded four boats holding 12 people. Guerrero Negro is famous for its salt mine.   Below is an accurate description of the sale making process at the Guerrero Negro sale making factory. "The salt-making process is fairly simple. Seawater is pumped into a series of collection ponds. About 700 million tons of seawater enters the system each year. As the water in the ponds evaporates, the salt concentration increases. The collection ponds are controlled by dikes and gates. At a critical level of salt concentration, the water is pumped into the next point, and so on. Eventually, more than a year later, the water becomes saturated with salt, and the mineral salt (almost entirely sodium chloride) begins to crystallize out.
